URA E DRAGOTIT

The Dragon Bridge is one of the most important engineering works of the Albanian Kingdom period and a testament to the development of road infrastructure in Albania in the 1930s.

The Dragon Bridge is one of the most important engineering works of the Albanian Kingdom period and a testament to the development of road infrastructure in Albania in the 1930s. Built in 1936, during the reign of King Zog I, it was designed by Italian engineers and built by the Italian company Ansaldo, with funding from the Albanian Government.

The bridge was built to enable crossing over the Vjosë River and to improve the Gjirokastër – Këlcyrë – Berat road connection, an axis of particular importance for the movement of people, the transport of goods and the economic development of Southern Albania. Its location in an area where the river crosses a rugged and mountainous landscape made the construction of this work a significant engineering challenge.

The bridge is a metal arch structure, with a total length of about 110 meters, which crosses the Vjosa riverbed without having intermediate supports in the river. This engineering solution gives the bridge not only structural stability, but also a unique appearance, harmonizing it with the surrounding natural landscape. For the time when it was built, it represented a significant achievement in the modernization of Albanian road infrastructure.

Its importance does not lie only in its practical function. The bridge also represents a chapter in the history of technical development and infrastructure in Albania, testifying to the way in which 20th-century engineering projects changed the connections between cities and regions. For this reason, it constitutes an element of historical, technical and architectural value, which deserves to be preserved and appreciated as part of the national heritage. Today, the Dragon Bridge is also known as a point of interest for visitors and photographers. The view of the metal structure over the course of the Vjosa, surrounded by mountain slopes and the characteristic landscape of the valley, creates a special combination between human work and nature. The proximity to the tourist areas of Tepelena, Këlcyrë and Përmet gives the bridge the potential to be included in itineraries that combine history, engineering, culture and natural tourism.

Declared a Category II Cultural Monument, the Dragon Bridge is an important testament to Albania's engineering heritage. It is not simply a crossing over the Vjosë River, but also part of the history of the roads that have connected the people, settlements and economies of Southern Albania. Its preservation and the promotion of its historical and touristic values constitute an opportunity to make this monument part of the cultural identity and tourist offer of the region.
