The Church of Saint Mary in Kosinë is a Category I Cultural Monument, covering an area of 105.6 m². It is situated in the picturesque village of Kosinë, approximately 1 km from the Këlcyrë–Përmet national road, making it an easily accessible destination for visitors interested in the region's history, architecture, and religious heritage. Dating back to the 12th century, the Church of Saint Mary is considered one of the oldest surviving religious buildings in the Përmet region and is regarded as the second oldest church of its type in the Balkans. Throughout the centuries, it has preserved important elements of Byzantine religious architecture, representing a valuable part of the area's cultural and historical identity. The church has undergone a complete restoration, helping to preserve its architectural character and revive its remarkable artistic and cultural values for future generations. From an architectural perspective, the building belongs to the cross-in-square type with a central dome, a distinctive form characteristic of Byzantine ecclesiastical architecture. Its interior consists of a rectangular narthex covered by a barrel vault, a domed central nave, four arms forming the shape of a cross, and the sanctuary (altar). The main entrance is situated on the western side and features an elegantly arched doorway. Each of the four exterior sides has a window that allows natural light to enter, illuminating the interior and emphasizing the simplicity of its architectural composition. One of the most distinctive features of the church is its construction technique. Brick is extensively used throughout the building and is combined with roughly hewn stone on the exterior walls. The façades are enriched with decorative brick patterns and architectural details, while the masonry follows the cloisonné technique, in which stone blocks are framed by bricks. This traditional construction method was widely used by Byzantine builders and gives the church a distinctive architectural appearance. Beyond its religious function, the Church of Saint Mary in Kosinë represents an important testimony to the development of Byzantine architecture and Christian heritage in southern Albania. Its historical significance, traditional construction techniques, and carefully preserved architectural features make it a valuable cultural attraction and a worthwhile stop for visitors exploring the villages and historical landmarks of the Përmet and Këlcyrë region.
