Hadrianopolis (Adrianopoli) is an ancient archaeological site located in the village of Sofratikë, in the Drino Valley, approximately 14 km south of Gjirokastër. The city developed during the Roman period, taking its name from Emperor Hadrian, and became an important urban centre in the historical landscape of the region. The archaeological site is particularly renowned for its impressive ancient theatre, one of the best-preserved and most distinctive structures of the settlement. Built on an artificial platform in an open area, the theatre reflects the architectural skills and cultural life of the ancient city. Archaeological excavations have also revealed remains of public buildings, residential structures and other elements that provide insight into the daily activities and urban organization of its inhabitants. Situated in the fertile Drino Valley, along an important ancient communication route connecting different parts of Epirus, Hadrianopolis played a significant role in the historical development of the region. Today, the archaeological park invites visitors to step back in time, explore the remains of this ancient settlement and discover an important chapter of Gjirokastër's rich archaeological and cultural heritage.
