Elevation 731, located in the Trebeshinë mountain range near Këlcyrë, is one of the most historically significant sites associated with the Second World War in southern Albania. It became the scene of one of the fiercest battles of the Greco-Italian War, fought during March 1941.

Due to its strategic position, this high ground became a primary target of the Italian offensive, which aimed to break through the Greek defensive lines and advance eastward. From 9 to 24 March 1941, Italian troops launched repeated attacks and intense artillery bombardments, facing strong resistance from the Greek forces positioned on the hill.

The fighting was extraordinarily intense, and the rocky terrain was transformed into a landscape devastated by continuous shelling. Despite committing substantial military forces and artillery, the Italian army failed to capture Hill 731. The Greek defenders managed to hold their positions against repeated assaults, making this battle one of the most notable episodes of the Greco-Italian War.

The battle also became significant because of its strategic and symbolic importance for both armies. The extreme conditions, difficult mountainous terrain and enormous intensity of the fighting made Hill 731 a symbol of resistance and military sacrifice.

Today, Hill 731 remains a site of considerable historical and commemorative importance, bearing witness to the scale of the conflict and the human sacrifices made during this battle. Its landscape preserves the memory of one of the most dramatic chapters of the war in the Trebeshinë region.

For visitors, history enthusiasts and researchers, Hill 731 offers an opportunity to explore an important part of the historical heritage of Këlcyrë and the wider Trebeshinë area, connecting the natural landscape with the events that shaped the history of the region.
