Stone city

Gjirokastra, known as the “City of Stone”, is one of the most characteristic cities with special historical, cultural and architectural values in southern Albania. Lying on the slopes of Mount Gjerë, above the Drino Valley, it is notable for its characteristic stone houses, slate roofs, cobblestone alleys and the majestic castle that towers over the city. The old city of Gjirokastra is part of the UNESCO World Heritage, a status that values its preserved architecture and its importance as an exceptional example of a historic city of the Ottoman period. The Gjirokastra Castle, the characteristic bazaar, monumental dwellings and religious buildings constitute important parts of its heritage. The Gjirokastra area is equally rich in natural, historical and cultural values. The Drino Valley, traditional villages, cultural monuments and mountainous landscapes create opportunities for the development of cultural, historical and natural tourism. Traditions, folklore, crafts, local cuisine and the characteristic hospitality of the inhabitants make this region an attractive destination for local and foreign visitors. Gjirokastra represents a unique blend of Albanian history, architecture and tradition. As a UNESCO city and an important center of cultural heritage of southern Albania, it remains one of the country's main tourist destinations, offering an authentic experience of Albanian history and culture.
